The River Raisin Institute has been working alongside the Orchard Center High School in Monroe, MI and JF New of Ann Arbor designing and installing a rain garden to promote sustainability and environmental education within the community.
The plans have been in the works for some time and installation was started last Friday. This project will be finished this week.
The idea of the project is to collect rain water that would otherwise be directed to the storm sewer system in the school parking lot, clean and retain the water with native plant material, and then allow it to percolate slowly into the ground water aquifer.
This is meant to further the use of new water diversion technologies in urban areas.
